The west coast of Jura is an area of natural wilderness so remote it would satisfy even the strongest yearnings for freedom and space. Pretty much uninhabited by man - it is the least-populated area of Europe - there is no livestock grazing and very few buildings. The only buildings along the fifty miles of shorelines between Kinuachdracd in the north and Feolin Ferry in the south are the bothies at Glengarrisdale, Ruantallain and Cruib Lodge and the summer house at Glenbatrick Bay. It is the latter which I have been lucky enough to visit on and off the last twenty years. The pictures, taken over the last four, are a collection of my wanderings around Glenbatrick Bay and our regular family excursions to and from the island in various boats to fish or picnic, a kind of coming and going.

These abstract images are not meant to be an accurate portrayal but more a bundle of feelings and impressions - a series of sketches if you like, which hopefully, when they are seen together, give the reader a strong sense of the spirit and soul of this extraordinary and untouched landscape. To have Ken Cockburn involved in this project has been an ideal collaboration for me: the lyrical addition of his poetry hugely enhances one’s understanding of the place.
